Relying on players to coexist and live peacefully is a gamble, and I’m sure Maxis is well aware of how certain players act online. The better the collaboration, the better the rewards. From a smoke-stack empire to a city of vices, SimCity gives you immense freedom to create unique and rewarding cities. Specialized buildings such as tourist attractions, casino resorts, and a multitude of niche factory buildings bring in the big bucks and give cities personality. Reluctantly, I often fell back to paving square city blocks instead of flowing, open roads to maximize building space.
Simcity pc review how to#
SimCity suggests how to lay down roads, which is great, but if you lay down too many ovals and winding roads, that small city space will only get smaller. A lack of space won’t solely hamstring independent development, it deconstructs creative city planning as well. A single city can certainly be autonomous, but it will run out of real estate for specializations, the best buildings in the land. Now, SimCity does all that for you, offering persistent Regions, (clusters of cities controlled by multiple players) allowing players to share workers, utilities, public services and other essentials for profit or as gifts. In SimCity 4, players found ways to make multiplayer work. Not only do you need to build a solid infrastructure, but SimCity really, really wants you to knock on your neighbors’ doors and ask for help using regional cooperative play. The only real hindrance comes from tight city grids, but this limitation really just reinforces a huge shift in gameplay and city-building philosophy. An initial tutorial offers city-planning basics, but after that, SimCity becomes an immensely open and deep sandbox for your inner city-planner. From the instantly-identifiable soundtrack to its sense of humor (I hope you like llamas), you can tell that Maxis consciously kept the reboot true to SimCity’s roots. Right off the bat, SimCity nails the feel of a Maxis game. In this reviewer’s opinion, Maxis redeemed itself. Further, seeing Maxis’s diligent troubleshooting (hopefully) exemplifies the company’s ongoing support for SimCity, which is encouraging. However, the company should be applauded for adding servers and making the game playable within a reasonable time. Let’s get this out of the way: Yes, developer Maxis dropped the ball and servers jammed up worse than rush hour traffic in New York City.

This reboot stays true to what long-time mayors love, and it adds features that give SimCity new layers of complexity and depth. The world changed quite a bit since 2003’s lauded SimCity ’s critically ambiguous SimCity Societies. Like the aforementioned titles, SimCity, the brainchild of legendary game designer Will Wright, also made a return after a long hiatus. Tomb Raider, The Amazing Spider-Man movie, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and Thief (with a tentative 2014 launch period) are just a few examples.
